Why do I need dental extraction?

We are in the business of saving teeth. So, tooth removal is a significant decision that only becomes an option after exhausting all the restorative options.

An extraction may be necessary if:

  • Your tooth is damaged beyond saving
  • Advanced gum disease has weakened the foundation
  • Overcrowding is causing problems for other teeth
  • You have an overly retained baby tooth
  • You have impacted or dysfunctional wisdom teeth

There’s no need to feel nervous or dreadful about tooth removal. Our office uses light touch techniques and powerful pain management techniques to ensure your treatment is painless. You’ll only feel movements or slight pressure, but no pain.

What should I expect from the dental extraction procedure?

The treatment starts with a consultation. The dentist will use dental x-rays to determine the tooth position and extent of damage to establish the best treatment approach.

Dental extraction can either be simple or surgical.

  • Simple extraction: This extraction is ideal for a tooth accessible in the mouth and having a straightforward issue like decay or crack. The dentist will loosen the tooth from its socket and pull it out in one piece for a simple extraction.
  • Surgical extraction: The dentist recommends this extraction for an ingrown (impacted) tooth or one whose crown is broken at the gum line. Surgical extractions start by making a small incision on the gums to access the tooth. Sometimes, the dentist may remove some underlying bone. Typically, the doctor breaks the tooth into two for a less invasive procedure. Finally, we clean and stitch the wound to begin healing.

We don’t just extract your tooth and send you on your way. Our team provides detailed post-op instructions to help minimize discomfort and prevent complications after your procedure. Your aftercare includes medications and home remedies like adequate rest, ice packs, diet changes, etc. Your recovery takes a few days, and soon you’ll be back on your feet.

Should I replace my tooth after extraction?

You must replace an extracted tooth immediately unless it’s an overcrowded, extra, or baby tooth. Otherwise, leaving the tooth untreated results in diminished oral functionality, bone loss, a misaligned bite, and other issues.

Our office suggests replacing your missing tooth with one of the following options: an implant, a traditional bridge, or a removable appliance. All of these alternatives are designed to function like and look similar to your natural tooth. For patients who have metal allergies, we often recommend zirconia implants. In these instances, we will refer them to an oral surgeon for the placement of the implant. After the implant heals and fuses with the jawbone, it will offer a level of stability comparable to that of your natural tooth.
